Penny Pincher in Paradise Project: Doug Nordman
Where are you going? When you are at 15 years of [military] service, what do you see happening in five years? Will you continue on active duty, will you retire from the military and find a bridge career, or will you retire early and never work for a paycheck again?
Those are the questions that retired submariner, Doug Nordman, asks at the opening of his acclaimed book, The Military Guide to Financial Independence & Retirement.
Sample Chapter One for free to understand Doug’s philosophy.
Doug has made a secondary career of sharing tips and tricks to post-military financial success. Enviable, yes. Commendable, because he donates the royalties from his blog and his book to military charities. The total takeaway for The Wounded Warrior Project & Fisher House Foundation tops $9000.
Doug and I both live in Hawaii. Small island. Islanders are always shaking our heads because it may take 6 degrees to separate in the rest of the world, but commonly only 2 or 3 separate us.
Truth is I bumped into him on cyberspace. Specifically, I was listening to Todd R. Tressider’s The Financial Mentor Podcast, Episode 4: Early Retirement Success Story with Doug Nordman. Worth the listen. Go ahead. I’ll wait.
Although Doug has established a clear niche for himself as an authority on military finances, his ideas, tips and philosophy transcends his unique circumstances.
Before the end of the podcast, I made a note to see if I could interview him for my Penny Pincher in Paradise Project.
I was even more thrilled that he agreed to a Twitterview/Tweetchat format which gives you a chance to chime in with your queries.
And it gets better. Remember how I said that Doug is generous? Well, he has already set up three books to be gifted through Goodreads. Just click here or on the photo of the book jacket above to enter. A little bird told me there will be more giveaways for those bold enough to tweet during the chat.
UPDATE: The Twitterview is over but you can read it on Storify. If you want a chance to win one of two more copies, see the rules at the end of the archive. Sign in with your Twitter account to retweet, favorite and the like.
I recommend using Tweetchat for ease of participation. Here is the URL to our realtime chatroom: http://tweetchat.com/room/HICM Just click the link and sign in with your Twitter account. But you can also follow along on any Twitter app like TweetDeck or Hootsuite. I’ll Storify the event and post it here as an update.
Mark you calendars for Black Friday when we resume are weekly Twitterviews at the same Tweetchat time: Noon HST on Aloha Fridays. Next week while everyone else is elbowing their way to the bargain bin, join Amy and me for a fun and feisty #BookFriday with @HawaiiCM #HICM.
